Fact Files : What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are natural substances that protect the body from harmful molecules known as free radicals. Antioxidants are produced in our bodies and are available in many of the foods we eat.

Antioxidants include vitamins A (beta carotene), C, E and flavonoids, as well as minerals such as zinc and selenium.

What are free radicals?

Free radicals can attack and damage body cells, which may lead to the development of diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Free radicals are produced by the body in response to daily metabolism, activity, alcohol, some types of fats in foods and other external factors such as pollution, UV radiation and x-rays.

How do I increase my intake of antioxidants?

Antioxidants are abundant in all fruits and vegetables so increasing your intake of a range of these foods will increase your intake of antioxidants.

Ensure you have at least two serves or fruit and five serves of vegetables a day in order to consume antioxidants. Add nuts and seeds to your diet and include legumes in meals.
